美国罗丹国际艺术家基金会怀着无比沉痛的心情获悉:中国当代著名油画艺术大师徐芒耀先生,于2026年6月2日凌晨6时46分在北京因病辞世,享年81岁。

徐芒耀先生是中国当代最具影响力的现实主义油画家之一,也是中国改革开放后培养出来的重要艺术教育家和学术领军人物。他以深厚的人文情怀、严谨的学院精神和卓越的艺术创造力,在中国油画发展史上留下了不可磨灭的印记。
1945年,徐芒耀先生出生于上海,祖籍浙江崇福。1978年,他考入中国美术学院(原浙江美术学院)油画系研究生班,成为“文革”结束后第一届艺术类研究生,师从王德威、吴国亭、全山石等著名艺术教育家。此后,他长期致力于油画创作与教学研究,先后赴法国巴黎国家高等美术学院、巴黎国家装饰艺术学院深造与交流,将欧洲古典写实传统与中国文化精神融会贯通,形成了独具魅力的艺术风格。

作为一位杰出的艺术教育家,徐芒耀先生曾任上海师范大学美术学院教授、院长,培养了大批优秀艺术人才。他不仅以作品影响时代,更以人格和学识塑造了一代中国艺术家的精神品格。

令我们深感荣幸的是,2023年徐芒耀先生曾亲临香港,出席由美国罗丹国际艺术家基金会、世界华人美术金笔奖组委会及国际艺术家联盟共同举办的“香港世纪之约——世界华人美术金笔奖国际艺术论坛暨颁奖盛典”。在那次具有历史意义的国际艺术盛会上,徐芒耀先生荣获“世界华人美术金笔奖·时代艺术家功勋奖”。
尤其令人难忘的是,在世界华人美术金笔奖国际艺术论坛上,徐芒耀先生发表了极具学术高度和艺术深度的重要演讲。他结合自己数十年的艺术实践与国际交流经历,深入阐述了写实油画的精神价值、艺术教育的重要使命以及中国油画未来发展的方向。他强调艺术家不仅要掌握扎实的造型能力,更要具备独立思考的人文精神和对时代的责任感。先生睿智而深刻的见解,引发了与会艺术家、学者和文化界人士的强烈共鸣。那场发言不仅展现了一位艺术大师深厚的学术修养与国际视野,也让我们每一位聆听者受益匪浅,至今仍记忆犹新。

今天,艺术大师的离去,是中国艺术界的重要损失,也是世界华人文化艺术界共同的遗憾。然而,伟大的艺术从不会因生命的终结而消失。徐芒耀先生留下的大量经典作品、学术思想和教育成果,将继续影响未来一代又一代艺术家。他对艺术真理的执着追求,对美的崇高信仰,以及对中华文化的深厚情感,将成为中国当代艺术发展历程中的宝贵精神财富。
斯人已逝,风范长存;丹青不朽,艺道永恒。

A GreatMaster Departs, the Art World Mourns
— Rodin International Artist Foundation Mourns the Passing of Renowned OilPainting Master Xu Mangyao
The Rodin International Artist Foundation (RIAF) has learned with profoundsorrow that Mr. Xu Mangyao, one of the most distinguished masters ofcontemporary Chinese oil painting, passed away in Beijing at 6:46 a.m. on June2, 2026, following an illness. He was 81 years old.
Mr. Xu Mangyao was among the most influential realist oil painters incontemporary China and a leading art educator and academic figure nurturedduring the era of China’s Reform and Opening-Up. Through his profoundhumanistic spirit, rigorous academic discipline, and extraordinary artisticcreativity, he left an indelible mark on the history of Chinese oil painting.
Born in Shanghai in 1945, with ancestral roots in Chongfu, Zhejiang Province,Mr. Xu entered the graduate program of the Oil Painting Department at the ChinaAcademy of Art (formerly Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts) in 1978, becoming amember of the first class of art postgraduates admitted after the CulturalRevolution. He studied under renowned art educators including Wang Dewei, WuGuoting, and Quan Shanshi. Throughout his career, he devoted himself to oilpainting, teaching, and academic research. He further pursued advanced studiesand artistic exchanges at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts deParis and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris,successfully integrating the traditions of European classical realism with thespiritual essence of Chinese culture to create a uniquely compelling artisticlanguage.
As an outstanding art educator, Mr. Xu served as Professor and Dean of theCollege of Fine Arts at Shanghai Normal University, where he nurturedgenerations of talented artists. He influenced his era not only through hisartworks but also through his character, scholarship, and dedication to shapingthe intellectual and moral spirit of Chinese artists.
Throughout his artistic career, Mr. Xu remained steadfast in a humanisticrealist vision. With exceptional mastery of form and a keen artisticsensibility, he portrayed both the spirit of the age and the depth of humanlife. His portraits, figurative works, and landscapes are imbued with warmthand vitality, establishing a distinctive visual language that bridges realismand poetic expression. Widely regarded as one of the foremost representativesof contemporary Chinese oil painting, his works have been exhibited extensivelyin France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Hong Kong, andMacau, and are treasured by major institutions and collectors around the world.
We are especially honored that in 2023 Mr. Xu personally attended “A CentennialAppointment in Hong Kong—The World Chinese Fine Arts Golden Brush AwardInternational Art Forum and Awards Ceremony,” jointly organized by the RodinInternational Artist Foundation, the World Chinese Fine Arts Golden Brush AwardOrganizing Committee, and the International Artists Alliance. At thishistorically significant international gathering, he was presented with the“World Chinese Fine Arts Golden Brush Award – Distinguished Achievement Awardfor Artists of the Era.”
Most memorable of all was the keynote address Mr. Xu delivered during theInternational Art Forum. Drawing upon decades of artistic practice andinternational exchange, he eloquently articulated the spiritual value ofrealist oil painting, the vital mission of art education, and the futuredirection of Chinese oil painting. He emphasized that artists must not onlypossess rigorous technical skills but also cultivate independent humanisticthinking and a strong sense of responsibility toward their times. Hisinsightful and profound observations resonated deeply with artists, scholars,and cultural leaders in attendance. That speech demonstrated not only thescholarly depth and global vision of a true master but also left an enduringimpact on everyone who had the privilege of hearing him speak.
Mr. Xu Mangyao was humble, gracious, and exemplary in character. He not onlyshowcased the highest achievements of Chinese realist oil painting to the worldbut also earned widespread admiration through the wisdom, generosity, andintegrity of an esteemed artistic elder. Reflecting on that treasured gatheringtoday, the memory remains vivid and deeply moving.
The passing of such a great master represents a tremendous loss to the Chineseart community and a shared sorrow throughout the global Chinese cultural andartistic world. Yet truly great art never fades with the end of a human life.The remarkable body of work, scholarly contributions, and educational legacyleft by Mr. Xu will continue to inspire generations of artists to come. Hisunwavering pursuit of artistic truth, his noble faith in beauty, and hisprofound devotion to Chinese culture will remain an invaluable spiritualtreasure in the ongoing development of contemporary Chinese art.
Though the man has departed, his grace and example endure; though life hasended, his art remains eternal.
The Rodin International Artist Foundation extends its deepest condolences toMr. Xu Mangyao’s family and expresses heartfelt sympathy to the Chinese artcommunity and all those throughout the world who admired and respected him.
May the Master rest in peace.
His artistic spirit will continue to shine like an undying beacon, illuminatingthe path forward for Chinese art. His scholarly integrity and personal charismawill forever be inscribed in the history of the development of Chinese art and culturethroughout the global Chinese community.
