2026年5月17日下午,镇江赛珍珠纪念馆洋溢着庄重而温暖的人文气息。由罗丹国际艺术家基金会无偿捐赠、著名美籍华裔公共艺术家艾伦·赵琼博士(Dr.Qiongzhao Ellen Schicktanz)亲自创作的赛珍珠青铜雕像,在中外嘉宾共同见证下,正式落座镇江赛珍珠纪念馆。
来自中国、法国、美国文化界与学术界的代表齐聚一堂,共同见证这一具有国际文化意义的重要时刻。

就在三个月前的2026年2月8日,同样由艾伦·赵琼博士创作的赛珍珠青铜雕像,曾在美国宾夕法尼亚州赛珍珠故居博物馆隆重揭幕,由罗丹国际艺术家基金会捐赠,赛珍珠故居博物馆永久收藏。
时隔百余日,另一尊赛珍珠青铜雕像又正式落座她在中国的精神原乡——镇江。
这种跨越太平洋的“双城雕像”文化互动,具有深远的象征意义。
它意味着:赛珍珠不仅属于美国文学史,也属于中国近现代文化史;不仅属于20世纪,更属于今天这个依然需要文明理解与人类互信的世界。
镇江:赛珍珠真正的“精神原乡”
赛珍珠(Pearl S. Buck)出生于美国,却在中国镇江度过了最重要的童年与青春时代。她在这里学习中文,感受中国社会与民间生活,理解东方文化的伦理与情感。
镇江不仅是她成长的地方,更是其精神形成的重要源头。
她后来以小说《大地》(The Good Earth)震动世界,并荣获普利策文学奖与诺贝尔文学奖。她笔下的中国农民、中国土地、中国家庭与中国伦理,并非遥远的东方想象,而是源于长期生活与深刻理解后的真实书写。
正如镇江市赛珍珠研究会会长卢章平在致辞中所言:
“镇江是赛珍珠的精神原乡,赛珍珠是镇江走向世界的重要文化名片。”

— A Bronze Sculpture Bridging Eastern and WesternCivilizations and the Shared Emotions of Humanity —
On the afternoon of May 17, 2026, the Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall inZhenjiang was filled with an atmosphere of solemnity and human warmth. In thepresence of distinguished guests from China and abroad, a bronze statue ofPearl S. Buck, generously donated by the Rodin International Artists Foundationand personally created by renowned Chinese American public artist Dr. QiongzhaoEllen Schicktanz, was officially installed at the Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hallin Zhenjiang, China.
Representatives from the cultural and academic communities of China,France, and the United States gathered together to witness this important eventof international cultural significance.
Frédéric Sitbon, Deputy Mayor of Asnières-sur-Seine, France,attended the ceremony with an official delegation. In his speech, he remarkedthat Pearl S. Buck regarded Zhenjiang as “the homeland of her heart,” and thatthe memorial hall is not merely a museum, but a sacred place preserving memory,understanding, and human connection. He highly praised the Foundation’sgenerous donation and Dr. Ellen Schicktanz’s artistic achievement, noting thatthe bronze sculpture vividly captures Buck’s benevolent gaze toward the futureand reflects her spiritual character as both a humanitarian and a Nobellaureate. As Asnières-sur-Seine and Zhenjiang prepare to establish a friendlycooperative relationship, he expressed hope that Pearl Buck’s bridge-buildingspirit would continue to inspire new bridges of friendship, art, and sharedvalues between China and France.
Lu Zhangping, President of the Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck ResearchAssociation, extended his highest respect to the Foundation and to Dr. EllenSchicktanz in his address. He emphasized that Pearl S. Buck, the NobelPrize-winning writer who emerged from Zhenjiang onto the world stage, foreverbelongs spiritually to the city. He stated that this lifelike bronze statuewill stand as a lasting testament to the profound bond between Pearl Buck andZhenjiang, becoming a new cultural landmark for the city’s internationalcultural exchange.
Following the speeches, President Lu Zhangping and Deputy MayorFrédéric Sitbon jointly unveiled the bronze statue of Pearl S. Buck. Officialsfrom relevant Zhenjiang departments, representatives of the Pearl S. BuckResearch Association, and guests from China and abroad attended the unveilingceremony.
This moment marked not only the permanent installation of anartwork, but also symbolized a civilizational echo spanning more than a century— from the banks of the Yangtze River in Zhenjiang to the Pearl S. Buck Housein Pennsylvania, from literature and history to sculpture and public art, andfrom China and the United States to France. The spiritual legacy of a NobelPrize-winning author is once again being contemplated by the world in a newartistic form.
A CulturalDialogue Across China and the United States
Just three months earlier, on February 8, 2026, another bronzestatue of Pearl S. Buck created by Dr. Ellen Schicktanz was ceremoniouslyunveiled at the Pearl S. Buck House Museum in Pennsylvania, USA. That sculpturewas likewise donated by the Rodin International Artists Foundation andpermanently collected by the museum.
Now, over one hundred days later, a second bronze sculpture of PearlS. Buck has officially found its home in her spiritual homeland in China —Zhenjiang.
This “dual-city sculpture” cultural exchange across the Pacificcarries profound symbolic significance.
It signifies that Pearl S. Buck belongs not only to the literaryhistory of the United States, but also to the modern cultural history of China;not only to the twentieth century, but also to today’s world, which stillurgently needs civilizational understanding and mutual human trust.
Zhenjiang:Pearl Buck’s True Spiritual Homeland
Although Pearl S. Buck was born in the United States, she spent themost formative years of her childhood and youth in Zhenjiang, China. It washere that she learned Chinese language and culture, experienced Chinese societyand everyday life, and developed a deep understanding of Eastern ethics,emotions, and human relationships.
Zhenjiang was not simply the place where she grew up; it was theessential source of her spiritual and intellectual formation.
Her later masterpiece, The Good Earth, profoundly moved readersaround the world and earned her both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize inLiterature. “Zhenjiang is Pearl Buck’s spiritual homeland, and Pearl Buck is oneof Zhenjiang’s most important cultural ambassadors to the world.”
At a time in the early twentieth century when China was widelymisunderstood in the West, Pearl S. Buck transformed global perceptions ofChina through literature. She enabled Western readers, many for the first time,to recognize the dignity, emotional depth, suffering, and humanity of ordinaryChinese people.
In this sense, she was not merely a novelist, but also a translatorbetween civilizations.
Bronze:Giving Eternal Form to Literary Spirit
The bronze statue installed at the Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall inZhenjiang measures approximately 86 centimeters in height and 70 centimeters inwidth, with an overall weight of nearly 300 pounds. The sculpture possesses acalm and dignified presence.
The work preserves Pearl Buck’s gentle elegance while simultaneouslyexpressing her intellectual strength and humanitarian spirit.
In his remarks, Deputy Mayor Frédéric Sitbon particularly observed:
“This sculpture vividly presents Pearl Buck’s benevolent gaze towardthe future.”

Dr. Ellen Schicktanz’s monumental historical bronze reliefs havelong been permanently installed at major American historical institutions,including the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.
