Condolence Letter
To the family of Mr. Chen Lynsheng,
Wemourn the passing of Mr. Chen Lynsheng, whose presence shaped the spirituallandscape of Chinese art and cultural thought. With a life devoted to inquiry, preservation, and vision, he became a quiet force behind the continuity ofvisual civilization. At the Greater American Institute of Art (GAIA), we offerour most heartfelt condolences and enduring respect. His absence leaves aprofound silence, but his legacy continues to speak across generations andcultures.
Mr.Chen Lynsheng was a towering figure in the fields of Chinese art history andcultural construction. Over the course of nearly seven decades, his workspanned image philosophy, art criticism, museum studies, curatorial innovation, educational leadership, cultural policy, and international exchange. Hisprofound vision and tireless devotion not only anchored the foundations ofmodern Chinese art scholarship but also left a lasting imprint on the globalhistory of visual culture.
Hispublications were monumental in scope. With more than fifty scholarlymonographs and additional volumes of collected writings, painting, calligraphy, and photography, his life’s work comprises over eighty volumes. Seminal workssuch as A Pictorial History of New China’s Art, The Flying Red Flag, andStudies on Theme-Based Art after Yan’an elevated the discipline to new heights. His pioneering methodology of image-based historiography reshaped contemporarythought, while his sense of cultural architecture rippled across generations.Within the interplay of time and image, Professor Chen built pathways tointellectual depth and historical vision.
ProfessorChen’s commitment to practice was no less extraordinary. He personallyestablished eight museums and art institutions, integrating research, curation, preservation, and education. With his private collection, he founded theworld’s first Oil Lamp Museum—testament to his ability to bring overlooked traditionsinto luminous focus. His unparalleled vitality once led him to open three soloexhibitions in a single day, a feat both dazzling and humbling.
Duringhis six-year tenure as Deputy Director of the National Museum of China, heinitiated a major transformation of the curatorial system, collectioncataloguing, and thematic exhibition planning, laying a solid foundation forChina’s national art historiography. In recent years, he further bridgeddisciplines by serving as Director of the Center for Art and Science at theUniversity of Science and Technology of China, pioneering integrative curriculathat united technology and the humanities, and planting seeds of aestheticconsciousness within the landscape of scientific education.
As aneducator, Professor Chen shaped generations of minds through his roles asdoctoral advisor and faculty member at the China National Academy of Painting,Nanjing University of the Arts, Shanghai University, and beyond. His teachingssowed the roots of aesthetic literacy throughout the nation.
Mr.Chen Lynsheng was not only deeply engaged with Chinese academia but alsoremained committed to global cultural development. As Senior Advisor to theGreater American Institute of Art (GAIA), he supported the founding of our instituteand encouraged the rise of the “New North American Art Movement.” He alsocontributed actively to organizations such as the Association of ChineseProfessors in America, becoming a spiritual anchor that linked the narrativesof art history between China and the West.
ProfessorChen also devoted his life to the Chinese Han Pictorial Art Society. From hisearliest years after graduation to his final days as its President, he advancedthe institutional support for Han pictorial traditions and grassroots visualheritage, leaving an indelible mark on the living evolution of China’s arthistorical lineage.
Inevery place he traveled—whether curating exhibitions, delivering lectures, orconducting field research—Professor Chen’s voice illuminated minds. Hislectures wove together the spirit of Chinese aesthetics and the diversity ofglobal art traditions. With eloquence and vision, he transformed knowledge intolanterns, casting light for seekers of culture and meaning.
Nowthat Mr. Chen Lynsheng has returned to the stars, his insight and convictionremain embedded in our shared cultural memory. All of us at the GreaterAmerican Institute of Art will forever honor his legacy, continuing the path heilluminated—the path of art, of humanity, of museology. We shall walk, steadfast and humble, along the celestial trajectories of image andcivilization, with heart-light undimmed and hands ever sowing.
Mayhis spirit become a guiding constellation, shining upon the evolving course ofhuman culture.
