       当天下午举行的庆典上,新任女校长Jennifer L. Mnookin(原威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校校长)发表致辞。

       Prince John

       一年一度的哥伦比亚大学校友会志愿者峰会CALE(Columbia Alumni Leaders Experience),便是维系这套庞大网络的重要载体。

New York Vista | Columbia University Opens a New Nobel Chapter: 89 Nobel Laureates, Decoding the Century‑Spanning Humanistic Core of the Prestigious Institution

Caption: Official poster for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics. Laureates: Robert E. Hall (Stanford University) and Michael Woodford (Columbia University). The prize is awarded for laying solid microeconomic foundations for macroeconomic stabilization policies.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics has officially made a global breakthrough, jointly awarded to two distinguished scholars: Professor Michael Woodford from Columbia University and Professor Robert E. Hall from Stanford University, in recognition of their foundational research that establishes microeconomic frameworks for macroeconomic stability. The inspiring news has swept through academic communities worldwide. On the very afternoon of the announcement, Columbia University held a grand Nobel Prize celebration ceremony to honor this supreme academic glory belonging to the campus.

Jennifer L. Mnookin, the newly appointed President of Columbia University and former Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, delivered an official address at the celebration. She introduced that Columbia University produced its first Nobel laureate in 1906. Since the establishment of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1968, the university has cultivated 16 Nobel laureates in economics. To date, Columbia boasts a total of 89 Nobel laureates across physics, chemistry, medicine and various other disciplines. The university officially announced this remarkable milestone at the grand ceremony.

On October 12, 2026, Eastern Time, following the release of the 2026 Nobel Prize results, Professor Zhao — a cross-generational mentor friend of Prince John-Wang Guoquan and a long-serving faculty member who has taught at Columbia University’s School of Medicine for decades — learned of the outstanding achievement and paid a special personal visit to Professor Woodford’s office to extend sincere congratulations. Upon receiving the congratulatory visit, Professor Woodford voluntarily walked out of his office and took a commemorative photo with Professor Zhao at the doorway. This touching moment vividly interprets Columbia University’s timeless academic ethos. Even as a world-class prestigious scholar with global fame, Professor Woodford maintains humility, simplicity and affability, without any sense of arrogance or distance. Within the noble academic palace, scholars treat each other with full sincerity and mutual respect regardless of seniority or academic standing. This inclusive, gentle and upright scholarly tradition deeply touched Professor Zhao.

Mnookin; the lower right features Prince John-Wang Guoquan taking a group photo with Professor Zhao, witnessing the extraordinary academic glory of Columbia University together.

Meanwhile, Professor Zhao, who regularly discusses academic and humanistic topics with Prince John-Wang Guoquan, also promptly shared highlights and observations from this magnificent academic gala with Prince John-Wang Guoquan, an international host with remarkable achievements and influence in the field of international cross-cultural humanistic exchange, who had just returned to Shanghai from Europe.

Prince John-Wang Guoquan once enrolled in Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies (SPS). Due to his busy schedule of cross-border public welfare hosting and international cultural exchange work, he did not complete his formal academic studies. Relevant officials of the Columbia University Alumni Association took the initiative to invite and formally admit him into the official alumni community. Initially, Prince John-Wang Guoquan held a humble attitude and hesitated to accept the invitation, believing that he had not finished his full academic curriculum and was not qualified to identify himself as a Columbia alumnus.

Alumni Association officials further explained that world-renowned figures including Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates also left school before completing their studies yet are always officially recognized and cherished as distinguished Columbia alumni.

This meaningful conversation enabled Prince John-Wang Guoquan to thoroughly understand Columbia University’s inclusive and advanced talent philosophy. The elite Ivy League institution never evaluates talents merely based on academic diplomas or classroom grades. Instead, it highly values the profound spiritual connection between individuals and the university, as well as the positive social value, global influence and public contributions one creates for society and the international community.

These warm and authentic details fully reflect the most precious spiritual character of Columbia University. Top-tier scholars never carry a condescending attitude. Academic equality, sincere fellowship among peers, and the inheritance of academic spirit have constituted the enduring scholarly foundation of this century-old prestigious university.

Founded more than 270 years ago, Columbia University, the fifth-oldest higher education institution in the United States, is rooted in the core of Manhattan, nurturing nearly 90 Nobel laureates who have influenced the world. The world marvels at Columbia’s brilliant Nobel achievements, yet few truly understand its core charm. It is never a closed ivory tower, but an open intellectual hub deeply integrated into the world’s top metropolis. Rooted in New York, a global center of politics, economy and culture, the university gathers teachers and students from more than 140 countries worldwide. Through the collision of diverse civilizations, rational academic speculation and open global dialogue, it continuously explores key propositions concerning the common destiny of humanity.

Endowed with the identity of a cross-cultural humanities envoy and invited by official international institutions, Prince John-Wang Guoquan has been repeatedly invited to Columbia University’s official campuses and venues to serve as an international conference host from 2025 to 2026. He has presided over various high-level events, including official side sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, China-U.S. People-to-People Cultural Dialogue Forums, Global Youth Development Seminars, African Community Rights Advocacy Forums, and Latin American Development Issue Forums. These precious stage opportunities stem from his outstanding professional competence and accurate matching with international public welfare themes, allowing Prince John-Wang Guoquan to witness, perceive and decode the core spiritual genes of this prestigious Ivy League university from an insider perspective.

       I. Symbiosis of City and University: Rooted in the Global Core, Linking Academia to the World

The most distinctive feature of Columbia University lies in its unique symbiotic relationship with the international metropolis of New York. Unlike traditional Ivy League universities located in suburban areas far from urban life, Columbia is deeply embedded in Manhattan’s urban texture, adjacent to the United Nations Headquarters, global financial centers and top international think tank clusters. The diverse metropolis becomes its inclusive classroom, and global current affairs evolve into its most cutting-edge academic topics.

This unparalleled geographical advantage endows Columbia with an innate global vision. Academic research here is never limited to rigid book deductions. It closely focuses on complex real-world international issues and keeps pace with the forefront of human civilization progress. Rather than isolating itself from urban prosperity and diversity, the university actively absorbs multi-ethnic cultures, diverse ideological perspectives and inclusive urban vitality, transforming metropolitan openness into endless nourishment for academic innovation and ideological speculation.

At Columbia, academic research and social reality are closely integrated. Scholars and young students take root in local urban life while looking out to the whole world, exploring effective solutions to shared global challenges amid the pulsation of international cities. The campus always maintains an open and inclusive attitude, embracing outstanding young learners and exchange talents from all over the globe.

The campus embraces openness, inclusiveness and diversity, drawing outstanding global exchange participants. When people from varied backgrounds gather here, many vivid and interesting stories naturally emerge. Prince John-Wang Guoquan lived in Columbia’s student residence on 96th Street in Manhattan during his studies. He shared an apartment with a young alumna from Tsinghua University. The two roommates, with distinct academic backgrounds, often talked about studies and insights, forging precious friendship. When she moved out, she gifted her beloved skateboard to Prince John-Wang Guoquan. This skateboard carries the bond forged between cross-university roommates and stands as a token of his days living in Columbia’s student residence in New York. Having just learned to skateboard at that time, Prince John-Wang Guoquan, wanting to accompany several female alumni walking along the sidewalk, ventured to skate on that uneven pavement and fell accidentally, suffering a minor bone fracture. This minor mishap forced Prince John-Wang Guoquan to turn down the New York meet-and-greet with the renowned performing artist Liu Xiaoqing, alongside several important hosting engagements. This incident also brought him reflection: life’s journey is full of ups and downs. Aligned with Columbia’s spirit, as we explore the world, we ought to keep the enthusiasm to try new things while remaining prudent.

Caption: Prince John-Wang Guoquan hosts the joint forum of Global Women’s Leadership Summit delegates and Columbia University students on campus, focusing on global youth development and cross-cultural communication topics.

II. Diverse Exchange Venues: Collision of Ideas, Integration of Humanities and Faith

The century-old splendor of Columbia University lies not only in its top academic research capabilities and glorious Nobel laureate honors, but also in its inclusive educational philosophy that integrates diverse ideas, practices and humanities. Over more than two centuries of development, Columbia has always adhered to the dual development of rational academic research and warm humanistic education, breaking the shackles of utilitarian single-dimensional academic education.

In Columbia’s complete talent cultivation system, rigorous classroom academic research, global dialogue in international venues, and spiritual reflection in solemn halls complement and nourish each other perfectly.

St. Paul’s Chapel on campus serves as a core multi-cultural and interfaith public space of the university, rather than a closed religious venue for a single denomination. Free from narrow doctrinal barriers, it regularly hosts cross-cultural gatherings, multi-faith dialogues, graduation ceremonies, sacred music performances and youth spiritual meditation activities. Teachers and students from different ethnic groups, religious backgrounds and cultural identities can gather here to communicate, listen, reflect and collide diverse thoughts in a quiet and solemn atmosphere.

The chapel carries the university’s profound care for life value and spiritual growth, forming a perfect complement to rational academic research in teaching buildings. Together, they build a multi-dimensional spiritual communication and growth platform for global students. The campus accommodates young learners from over 100 countries, tolerates the integration and collision of different civilizations and diverse concepts. Academic exploration here goes far beyond theoretical derivation, extending to in-depth thinking about humanity, society, civilization and the ultimate value of life — this is the core foundation for Columbia to continuously cultivate top global talents and maintain its leading position among world-class universities.

Prince John-Wang Guoquan once hosted the Latin American Women’s Leadership International Forum at Columbia University’s Milbank Memorial Chapel. Inside this elegant and quiet century-old classical building, he listened to diverse thoughts and insightful voices from young leaders all over the world.

Caption: Prince John-Wang Guoquan hosts international high-level events at Columbia University’s Milbank Memorial Chapel. This sunken vintage century-old building features elegant classical architecture and undertakes numerous global cross-cultural dialogue activities.

On April 4 this year, during the Passiontide and Easter season, local Manhattan churches joined hands with Columbia University youth to hold a themed gathering at the campus St. Paul’s Chapel. The ancient sacred hall is solemn and grand, with a vast dome and flowing soft light, precipitating the profound humanistic temperature and spiritual heritage of the century-old prestigious university. Young participants gathered devoutly to observe the solemn Good Friday ceremony, meditating on the meaning of life, reverence for suffering and eternal hope.

The campus youth choir presented sacred music performances in the sanctuary. The quiet and distant melodies resonated throughout the hall, uniting participants from different regions and social circles in spiritual resonance. Through devout meditation and sacred music appreciation, everyone perceived the universal goodness, reverence and benevolence of humanity, fully demonstrating Columbia’s inclusive and nurturing humanistic temperament.

Caption: Prince John-Wang Guoquan takes an on-site photo with Mr. Situ Hong at the Good Friday themed gathering held at St. Paul’s Chapel, Columbia University.

Beyond rigorous academic research, Columbia University is permeated with a strong and warm humanistic atmosphere. In campus chapels, choir performances and instrumental recitals convey peace and warmth, interpreting the gentle and profound humanistic background of this top university. Rational academic exploration and spiritual humanistic nourishment promote and coexist with each other. All ideological speculations are not limited to data and theories, but extend to profound ultimate inquiries about life conscience and civilization value.

III. Global Alumni Network: Connecting Intellectual Partners Across Continents

After more than 270 years of accumulation and development, Columbia University’s alumni network has covered 192 countries and regions worldwide, gathering more than 400,000 outstanding alumni who are active in scientific research, literature and art, business operation, public affairs and various elite fields. Regional alumni branches spread across all continents enable every Columbia graduate to find like-minded alumni partners anywhere in the world and continue the sincere ideological connection cultivated on campus.

The annual Columbia Alumni Leaders Experience (CALE) Volunteer Summit is an important carrier for maintaining this huge global alumni system. On October 10, Eastern Time, the 2026 CALE Summit was grandly held on Columbia University’s campus. Many person-in-charges of Columbia alumni associations across China specially returned to the New York alma mater to attend the event. The summit gathered outstanding volunteer representatives and senior alumni leaders. All participants devote themselves wholeheartedly to alumni public service out of pure enthusiasm, inheriting the fine tradition of mutual assistance, inheritance and progress among Columbia alumni.

Caption: Exterior signage of the venue for the annual Columbia Alumni Leaders Experience (CALE) Volunteer Summit on Columbia University campus.

Columbia University owns a large-scale and vibrant alumni community in China, with online alumni groups covering the whole country, East China region and Shanghai local area. As a long-term overseas resident, Prince John-Wang Guoquan has limited residence time in Chinese mainland and cannot frequently participate in offline alumni activities. Nevertheless, Columbia’s Chinese alumni community regularly holds rich offline activities including industry seminars, thematic sharing sessions and high-end social salons, continuously consolidating the close alumni bond.

Transnational alumni connections often bring unexpected encounters in international occasions. Prince John-Wang Guoquan once interviewed Daniel, an outstanding Columbia alumni scholar, at Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore during the International Entomology Forum. Graduated from Columbia University with a major in Biological Sciences, Daniel is currently engaged in academic research in Singapore. This cross-border encounter is a vivid microcosm of Columbia’s global alumni network, proving that the talents cultivated by this century-old university spread all over the world and maintain persistent ideological resonance and spiritual connection across geographical distances.

Caption: Prince John-Wang Guoquan interviews Daniel, a Columbia University alumni and professional entomologist, at Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. Daniel graduated from Columbia University’s Biological Sciences program and currently works and researches in Singapore.

Every Nobel glory is the inevitable return of Columbia University’s 270 years of profound academic accumulation. With the solid foundation of 89 Nobel laureates, rooted in New York — the world’s core metropolis, Columbia University always embraces the world with an open and inclusive attitude. It empowers the progress of the times with rigorous academic strength, nurtures global young minds with profound humanistic spirituality, and adheres to the spirit of rational truth-seeking, virtue inheritance, diverse tolerance and eternal spiritual inheritance. This is the core password for this century-old Ivy League university to stand firmly at the peak of global higher education through changing times.

Repeatedly returning to this fertile land of ideology, participating in cross-cultural international exchanges, witnessing the integration of global civilizations, and perceiving the inner spiritual core of top prestigious universities have become extremely precious gains and profound insights in the life journey of Prince John-Wang Guoquan.
